GALVESTON — Eleven people were rescued Monday afternoon after a recreational vessel caught fire near the Texas City Dike, according to the United States Coast Guard.

The initial tip regarding the fire was submitted to KGTX 7 by Galveston Helicopters, which reported smoke coming from a vessel in the Galveston Ship Channel.

Officials said the boat caught fire around 1:58 p.m. near the dike. A short time later, all 11 people aboard abandoned the vessel and entered the water.
