GALVESTON — Police recovered dozens of packages containing cocaine Tuesday morning after the suspected narcotics washed ashore along the west end of the island.
According to the Galveston Police Department, officers responded around 9:12 a.m. to the 18000 block of FM 3005 after receiving reports of suspicious packages on the beach.
When officers arrived, they located 27 individually wrapped packages scattered along the sand near the shoreline. The packages were collected and transported to the Galveston County Justice Center for testing.
Authorities later confirmed the contents of the packages tested positive for cocaine.
Police have not released an estimated street value of the narcotics, and investigators have not said where the packages may have originated from or how long they had been in the water before washing ashore.
Incidents involving narcotics washing onto Gulf Coast beaches aren’t uncommon, as law enforcement agencies occasionally recovers drug bundles believed to have fallen from trafficking operations in the Gulf.
