GALVESTON – The U.S. Coast Guard and Texas General Land Office responded Tuesday night to an oil spill near the Port of Galveston after a vessel reportedly struck Pier 32, according to a report from KPRC 2.
Coast Guard officials said watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston received a call around 9:50 p.m. regarding a discharge of fuel oil. The source of the spill has since been secured, though the exact amount released remains under investigation.
Personnel and equipment were deployed to contain and clean up the spill, with efforts coordinated among the Coast Guard, Texas General Land Office, and the vessel’s operator, Forestwave Navigation BV.
As a precaution, the Galveston Ship Channel was temporarily closed from Gulf Copper to the Pelican Island Bridge to reduce potential environmental impact.
According to KPRC 2, officials are monitoring air quality and area safety, and no injuries or harm to wildlife have been reported. Mariners are asked to report any signs of oil to the National Response Center at 800-424-8802.
