GALVESTON – The City of Galveston is planning several events in April to help residents dispose of bulk items and recycle materials as part of its annual spring cleaning efforts, according to a city press release.
The city’s sanitation division will offer free bulk item collection days throughout April. Residents may place large items such as furniture, couches, mattresses and bagged yard debris out for pickup on scheduled dates based on location.
Collection dates are:
• April 17 — San Luis Pass to 7 Mile Road
• April 18 — 7 Mile Road to 51st Street
• April 24 — 51st Street to 31st Street
• April 25 — 31st Street to the East End
Residents are asked not to place bulk items under low-hanging wires, tree branches or near utility meters because crews will be unable to safely remove materials in those locations, the press release states.
Small amounts of building and construction material may also be accepted. Residents should contact the city’s transfer station to confirm which materials are allowed.
Outside of the special collection days, residents can bring bulk items to the city’s transfer station from April 15 through April 30 at no cost. To qualify, residential customers must present a current city utility bill and a photo ID showing they pay for city refuse service, according to the press release. Residents must be present during drop-off.
The transfer station is located at 5515 Harborside Drive. The facility does not accept tires, appliances containing Freon, insecticides or pesticides, batteries, liquids, flammable materials, paint, air conditioners, materials containing asbestos or fire extinguishers.
The city will also host two recycling events at the Galveston Recycling Center, 702 61st Street.
On April 18, residents can bring documents for secure shredding during a Shred Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents will also be able to drop off up to five tires for recycling, along with used motor oil, antifreeze or cooking oil in sealed containers on April 18 and April 25. Proof of residency is required.
According to the city press release, residents with questions can contact the public works department at 409-797-3630 or email publicworks@galvestontx.gov.
