GALVESTON — A man charged in connection with a fentanyl-related death in Galveston County pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced Friday to 180 days in jail, followed by 10 years of deferred adjudication probation, according to court records and attendees.

Kamron Zaheri entered the guilty plea in the case involving the death of Wade Potter and waived his right to appeal, before Judge Patricia Grady of the 212th District Court, records show.

Under deferred adjudication, a judge accepts a defendant’s guilty plea but does not enter a formal conviction. If the defendant successfully completes the terms of probation, the case can ultimately be dismissed.

Court documents also indicate Zaheri had previously been released on bond while awaiting trial, but that bond was later revoked after he was accused of committing another offense.

Prosecutors alleged Potter died after receiving fentanyl distributed by Zaheri. Under Texas law, a person can face a murder charge if delivering a controlled substance results in another person’s death.

Friends and family members of Potter say they are frustrated with the outcome and believe the sentence does not reflect the seriousness of the charge. They say they are planning a protest and are calling for further review of the case.

KGTX 7 contacted the District Attorney’s Office on Monday to request an interview with the prosecutor assigned to the case. A representative said the case record had not yet been updated. KGTX 7 requested a callback.
