BACLIFF – A major crash shut down part of a busy Bacliff intersection Tuesday afternoon as emergency crews responded and a medical helicopter prepared to land.

According to city officials, northbound traffic at the intersection of State Highway 146 and FM 646 was closed as authorities conducted a crash investigation. Officials said all directions of traffic could be temporarily shut down to allow a Life Flight helicopter to land.

Texas City police, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office were all on scene.

Witnesses said the crash involved a vehicle that appeared to be fleeing from police before the collision occurred.

Calvin and Megan Hulsey said they saw a blue car traveling at high speed before it collided with a white SUV and a truck near the intersection of Grand Parkway and Highway 146.

The witnesses said the truck caught fire following the crash. Calvin Hulsey said he ran to the truck, broke open the door and pulled the driver out of the burning vehicle before going to assist the driver of the SUV, which had flipped over.

The driver of the SUV was awake but appeared to be badly injured, the witnesses said.

Emergency crews arrived shortly afterward and began treating victims. Witnesses said firefighters later cut open one of the vehicles as part of the rescue effort.

Authorities have not yet released details about injuries or the cause of the crash.
