Update: Suspect dead after police pursuit ends in multi-vehicle crash in Bacliff

BACLIFF – Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that followed a police pursuit Tuesday afternoon, that started in Texas City.

According to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were requested by the Texas City Police Department around 2:50 p.m. to assist with a crash investigation at the intersection of State Highway 146 and Farm to Market Road 646.

Preliminary information indicates the crash occurred after a pursuit involving Texas City police. Authorities said the suspect involved in the pursuit was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said three other individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. Two were taken to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake and one was transported to University of Texas Medical Branch.

Witnesses Calvin and Megan Hulsey said they saw a blue car traveling at high speed before it collided with a white SUV and a truck near the intersection.

According to the witnesses, the truck caught fire after the crash. Calvin Hulsey said he ran to the vehicle, broke open the door and pulled the driver out before helping the driver of the SUV, which had flipped over.

Emergency crews later arrived and worked to rescue victims from the damaged vehicles.

Investigators with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team, Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit are assisting with the investigation. The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office is also involved.

Authorities said it is standard protocol for an outside agency to investigate incidents involving pursuits by the originating law enforcement agency.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
