GALVESTON – A suspect is dead and another person was hospitalized following a shooting and police pursuit on Galveston Island Thursday, according to the Galveston Police Department.
Officers were initially called to a home in the 21800 block of Lampasas after receiving reports of a man bleeding on the front porch, possibly from a gunshot wound.
When officers arrived, they saw a suspect fleeing the scene in a maroon pickup truck. With assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety, officers initiated a pursuit.
Authorities said an initial attempt to stop the vehicle near FM 3005 and Salt Cedar was unsuccessful. The pursuit continued along FM 3005, where officers deployed stop sticks, disabling several tires. A DPS helicopter also assisted in tracking the vehicle.
The pursuit ended just east of Jamaica Beach when the suspect drove into a ditch.
Officers conducted a high-risk approach and found the suspect had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was transported by Galveston EMS to UTMB, where he was pronounced dead.
Back at the original residence, officers located a second victim on the rear porch and began life-saving measures. That individual was also transported to UTMB for treatment. The person’s condition has not been released.
The Galveston Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is leading the case. The Texas Rangers are conducting a separate investigation into the pursuit.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details were not available at this time.
