HITCHCOCK – Two people have been arrested following a crash involving a Galveston County Sheriff’s Office deputy early Saturday in Hitchcock.

According to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 1 a.m. at the intersection of FM 2004 and Spruce Street.

Authorities said a deputy was attempting to initiate a traffic stop on a black SUV reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed when a white Dodge pickup truck struck the marked patrol unit.

The deputy was transported by EMS to UTMB Galveston, where he was treated and released. A K9 inside the patrol vehicle was not injured.

Investigators identified the driver of the pickup as Johnathan Hernandez, 24, who was taken to a hospital with minor injuries before being booked into the Galveston County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Officials said the black SUV returned to the scene following the crash. The driver, Sherlyn Trejo, 22, was detained after showing signs of intoxication and later charged with driving while intoxicated with an open container.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation, with assistance from multiple units within the sheriff’s office, including major crimes, crime scene, and crash reconstruction teams.
