GALVESTON — A 17-year-old from Missouri City has been charged after a pedestrian was killed in an alleged hit-and-run crash Sunday evening in Galveston, police said.

According to the Galveston Police Department, officers were called around 6:44 p.m. Sunday to the alleyway between the 2200 block of Avenues J and K for reports of an auto-pedestrian crash.

When officers arrived, they found a man with serious injuries and immediately began life-saving efforts until Galveston Emergency Medical Services arrived.

The victim, identified as 41-year-old Matthew Hayes of Galveston, was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branchemergency department, where he later died.

Investigators say witnesses told officers the victim was struck by a newer-model Ram pickup truck that was reportedly traveling recklessly eastbound through the alley while the victim was lying in the grass near the roadway.

Witnesses also told police the driver had struck the corner of a building in the 1000 block of 23rd Street before entering the alley and leaving the scene.

A description of the truck was shared with nearby patrol units, and police said the vehicle was later located at the Galveston Ferry landing.

Authorities arrested Logan Smith, 17, of Missouri City in connection with the crash.

Smith was booked into the Galveston County Jail and is charged with collision involving death and driving while intoxicated. Bond was set at $22,500.
