Did you know you can adopt an adult in Texas?

Many people associate adoption with infants — but Texas law allows any adult to be adopted with no upper age limit.

A stepparent who raised a child now grown, a mentor who became a parent in every meaningful sense, a caregiver who was never formally recognized — adult adoption exists to put the law in alignment with reality.

“It’s about finally giving legal recognition to a bond that was already there.”

The process is simpler than most expect. Both parties must consent in writing, the adopting parent must be at least two years older, and the case is heard before a district court judge — no home study, no background investigation.

Once finalized, the adoptee becomes a legal heir, may take the family name, and can receive a new birth certificate.

The legal consequences are real and lasting: inheritance rights, insurance recognition, and changes to existing estate plans.

If you’re considering adult adoption, it’s worth speaking with an attorney who can walk you through what it means for your specific family — and your finances.
