GALVESTON — A 51-year-old man died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency shortly after arriving at the Galveston County Jail, according to officials.
Authorities said Jarrod Holt was arrested around 4:49 a.m. by the La Marque Police Department on a felony parole warrant and transported to the jail about 50 minutes later.
During the intake process, Holt was evaluated by medical staff from the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he reported ingesting cocaine, officials said.
Shortly after the evaluation, Holt’s condition began to decline. Officials said he showed signs of distress, including vomiting and excessive sweating, before medical personnel initiated emergency treatment, including CPR.
Holt was transported to UTMB in Galveston, where he was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said the case is being investigated in accordance with state jail standards. The Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office are conducting an independent review of the in-custody death.
Officials said no additional details will be released while the investigation remains ongoing.
The sheriff’s office extended condolences to Holt’s family.
