GALVESTON — The Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano is scheduled to arrive in Galveston later this month as part of its 98th Midshipmen Training Cruise, according to the Galveston County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The vessel, often referred to as the “Ambassador and Seafarer,” is expected to dock at Pier 21 on the morning of May 28 and remain in Galveston through June 1.
The ship departed Cádiz, Spain, on Jan. 10 carrying 73 midshipmen from the Spanish Navy and Marine Corps graduating classes.
According to the chamber, the training cruise includes multiple international port stops, including visits to Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Curaçao and several U.S. cities.

The chamber said the voyage serves two primary purposes: providing hands-on naval and military training for midshipmen and supporting Spain’s diplomatic presence abroad.
During its stay in Galveston, the ship will be open to the public for tours at the following times:
- Friday, May 29: 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday, May 30: 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Sunday, May 31: 3:20 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Monday, June 1: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is expected to continue its training voyage following its departure from Galveston before ultimately returning to Spain later this summer.
