COUNTYWIDE — A heavy cockroach infestation, mold inside ice machines and unsafe food-storage practices were among the violations documented during recent restaurant inspections in Texas City.

At Taqueria La Hacienda, located at 1139 Texas Ave., inspectors reported a heavy cockroach infestation. According to the inspection report, numerous live cockroaches emerged from beneath a box when it was moved.

A live cockroach was also observed in the food-preparation area while employees were preparing food. Inspectors said the condition created an imminent risk of food contamination.

Inspectors also observed mold-like residue inside the restaurant’s ice machine chute, creating a potential source of contamination for the ice.

Uncovered raw meat was stored above eggs inside a cooler, creating a significant risk of cross-contamination, according to the report.

Inspectors also found residential-use Raid insecticide inside the establishment. The insecticide was stored next to food, creating a potential risk of chemical contamination.

At Bases Hamburgers, located at 925 21st St. in Texas City, inspectors reported visible mold inside the ice machine.

Employees were working without valid food-handler certificates, and handwashing stations were not supplied with soap or paper towels.

Inspectors also found clean utensils stored on top of bread and towels, creating a risk of contamination.

Three restaurants with violations documented during June inspections have since passed reinspection. Those establishments are Ol’ Mother’s Speakeasy in Bacliff, Napolera Enterprises in Texas City and Dickinson Seafood in Dickinson.

Restaurants receiving some of the highest scores in the latest inspection reports included Texas Star Bakery in Galveston, Popeyes on 61st Street in Galveston, Cafecito Latin Coffee in Friendswood, Angie’s Kitchen in Hitchcock and Chick-fil-A on Palmer Highway in Texas City.
