Practical Magic 2 is exactly what you would expect from a film like this: cheesy, fun and designed to tie up loose ends from the original.

While the first film was perfectly fine without a sequel, this follow-up still feels consistent with its tone and quality. The chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman remains just as strong.

The plot can feel somewhat predictable at times, though not to the point that it ruins the film. It also keeps unnecessary callbacks—an issue many long-awaited sequels have—to a minimum.

One weakness not present in the original is the development of the romantic relationships. Two main romances are featured: one enters the story already established and works well enough, while the other seems to spring up out of nowhere with little development to support it.

The special effects are not top-tier by any means, but they serve their purpose. Still, it would have been nice to see effects that felt more updated while remaining in line with the original film.

For the most part, the writing succeeds in maintaining the lighthearted, fun energy of the first movie, and the actors are generally able to sell it genuinely.

Overall, if you enjoyed the original Practical Magic, this is a worthy successor. If you did not enjoy the first film, however, this sequel is unlikely to change your mind.
