LEAGUE CITY — Clear Creek Independent School District held its annual Athletic Hall of Honor ceremony Saturday, honoring three past teams, two coaches and seven individual athletes.

Master of ceremonies Debbie Fuchs explained the focus of the event.

“This is our 10th annual Clear Creek ISD Hall of Honors celebration, where we bring in coaches, teams and individual athletes that are inducted into our Hall of Honor,” Fuchs said.

The work for the 15-member selection committee continues throughout the year.

“We’ll open up our nomination form today after this event, and then we go as a committee in March. Then we determine as a committee who will be named, then we will get in touch with them and begin the whole process of getting the celebration ready,” Fuchs said.

Those honored must meet certain requirements to be considered for induction.

“The selection process [is] hopefully getting the people who are well worthy of it. It’s the quality of the individuals. The nominations probably start in November and then ending in May,” said Dede MacPherson, president of the CCISD Hall of Honor committee.

One requirement, in addition to being nominated, involves how much time has passed since an athlete’s or coach’s career at CCISD.

“It has to be someone who has, in regard to athletes, they have to have graduated at least ten years, and they have to be nominated. The teams have to be nominated, and a coach usually has to be out four or five years, either left the school system or retired,” MacPherson said.

For some of the honorees, the ceremony also served as a reunion.

Among the oldest honorees was the 1964 Clear Lake women’s basketball team. The team’s starting lineup was able to reunite for the ceremony.

For others, like honoree Brian Williams, the moment was about celebrating the team rather than just himself.

“These are some of my teammates with me tonight, so it’s really been a special reunion for us, but we were inducted in 2021 as a team, and so there’s so many people who probably deserve it more than I do, but just the fact that it really is an honor, but I want to share it with these guys because there’s no way any one of us would be successful without the other,” Williams said.

Williams’ athletic accomplishments include a state championship in the high jump.

“I won state in high jump, and so I was also the state champion in 1981. I jumped over seven feet that year, and it was the fifth-highest jump in the nation. Then went back my senior year and jumped six foot ten, but that placed me third place in the state championship the next year. Back-to-back state runs was part of what got me to this place,” Williams said.

Throughout the ceremony, honorees, committee members and attendees echoed similar sentiments about the significance of being surrounded by those who helped shape CCISD athletics.

Nominations for next year’s Hall of Honor class are already open as the committee begins looking toward the future.
