FRIENDSWOOD – Last night marked Friendswood’s second blowout this season and their eighth straight win of the Friendswood’s impressive season as they trampled past the Freeman Golden Eagles, 30-0. With the victory, they placed first in 5A-1 Region III District 11 rankings over other undefeated, high-powered competition such as Randle and Angleton and rank at the top for most points scored in their district with 427.
Much like their previous home game against Iowa Colony, the Mustangs were off to a very faulty start. Mustangs quarterback Josh Brister tried to force the ball to the sidelines to the receiver, but outside linebacker Salofi Alexius came up with the interception, giving great field position to the Golden Eagles. But afterward, the rusty first drive left Brister undeterred as he heaved a 68-yard touchdown pass to receiver Rit Johnson.
Brister would finish last night’s game with four touchdown passes.
On the defensive side, aside from allowing 124 combined rushing yards on 32 combined carries, the Mustangs stood strong against Freeman’s offense limiting Golden Eagles quarterback Abraham Alarcon to 133 passing yards and one interception.
After the game, Mustangs head coach Jordan Johnson expressed how incredible his team played on both sides of the ball and how far they have come with the best record they’ve had in years.
“8-0 is a great number and I’m proud of that number, but I’m more proud of the work that’s been done to get to that point,” Coach Johnson said. “I’m proud of our players’ ability to compartmentalize, to go out and play a game, and to look at it as just one play at a time rather than the big picture of “Can we go 8-0?””.
Friendswood’s football team and winning streak will be put to the absolute test as they travel to Angleton (7-0) in a highly-anticipated matchup against an equally powerful Wildcats varsity team next Friday. Who will stand and who will fall?
