GALVESTON — A man who remained a fugitive for more than 26 years has been extradited from Nicaragua and returned to Galveston County to serve prison sentences for convictions involving the sexual assault and indecency of a child.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office announced that Roberto Moran Perez was extradited on Oct. 28, 2026, following an international effort involving the Sheriff’s Office, the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State.
Perez was convicted in 2000 of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the convictions carried sentences of 16 years and 10 years, respectively. He fled before sentencing and remained a fugitive for more than 26 years.
Investigators used an INTERPOL Red Notice as part of the international effort to locate and return Perez to the United States.
Perez is currently being held in the Galveston County Jail pending transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he is expected to serve his sentences.
