VATICAN CITY — For the first time in history, an American has been elected to lead the Roman Catholic Church. U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, has been chosen as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement followed the iconic signal of white smoke rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, prompting cheers and applause from tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out in celebration, as Vatican officials confirmed the outcome of the second day of the papal conclave.
“Peace Be With All of You”
Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeting the global Catholic community with a message of unity:
“Peace be with all of you!”
He expressed a desire for peace to “enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.”
The new pontiff addressed the crowd in Italian, Spanish, and Latin, offering gratitude to his fellow cardinals and remembering his years serving in Peru, where he built strong ties with the local Catholic community.
“Where a loyal people has shared its faith and has given a lot,” he said warmly, in reference to his former diocese.
Unexpected Choice in a Historic Conclave
Prevost’s election came as a surprise to many Vatican observers, as few experts had placed an American high among the likely candidates. The decision was made by the 133 voting cardinals during a private conclave that began earlier this week.
His selection was confirmed after the traditional questions were posed inside the Sistine Chapel:
- “Do you accept your canonical election as supreme pontiff?”
- “What name do you wish to be called?”
Upon accepting, the new pope was dressed in papal garments and led to the balcony, where Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham delivered the traditional Latin announcement:
“Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!” (“I bring you tidings of great joy: We have a pope!”)
A Moment Felt Worldwide
Thousands filled Via della Conciliazione, the main street leading to the Vatican, many overcome with emotion. Pilgrims, tourists, and clergy alike erupted in celebration as Pope Leo XIV offered his apostolic blessing.
He also honored his predecessor, Pope Francis, speaking affectionately of his leadership and example.
The election of a pope from the United States marks a dramatic shift in Vatican history, potentially signaling new global priorities and perspectives for the Catholic Church in the decades ahead.
