Kemah Considers Concept for Large Scale, Mixed Use Development

Staff Reports Avatar

KEMAH – Officials in Kemah are in the early stages of considering a large-scale development project that could expand the city’s tourism and economic footprint.

The concept, still under review, outlines a proposed destination development on roughly 30 acres. Plans currently include a mix of uses such as an event and sports center, a hotel, and a walkable area with retail and dining options designed to align with the city’s existing character.

At the center of the proposal is a multi-purpose event and sports facility. Preliminary plans estimate the building could range from 90,000 to 120,000 square feet and sit on approximately 9 to 11 acres. The space would be designed to accommodate up to eight basketball courts, with the ability to convert for volleyball and pickleball, along with flexible areas for conventions, exhibits, community events, and small performances.

City leaders say the project is being evaluated as a potential way to grow Kemah’s presence as a regional destination, particularly in sports tourism, while also supporting local businesses and residents.

Mayor Robin Collins said the concept is intended to build on the city’s existing attractions while introducing new opportunities. She added that the process will be approached carefully as officials assess what the development could mean for the community.

The proposed development would be designed to complement established attractions in Kemah, with the goal of encouraging longer visits and increasing overall visitor activity. Additional features being considered include spaces focused on fitness, recreation, and broader community use.

City officials emphasized that the project remains in a conceptual phase. Ongoing evaluations, including feasibility, funding, and design considerations, will determine whether and how the project moves forward.

Leaders say they plan to continue updating the public as the process develops.
