Travel plans across the country were disrupted this weekend after Spirit Airlines halted operations and canceled all scheduled flights.

The airline announced early Saturday that it is beginning an “orderly wind-down,” telling customers not to go to the airport and confirming that no flights will resume.

Passengers with upcoming trips are being directed to seek refunds, with the company saying it will automatically process reimbursements for tickets purchased directly through its website. Those who booked through third parties will need to contact their travel providers.

The shutdown leaves thousands of travelers seeking alternate arrangements, while also affecting a large number of employees tied to the airline’s operations.

The company said the decision follows mounting financial pressure that ultimately left the airline unable to continue operating. The carrier had been working to recover from ongoing struggles since the COVID-19 pandemic and was attempting to navigate its second bankruptcy in under a year.

According to the company, rising fuel costs and broader economic challenges worsened its financial outlook, eliminating any viable path forward.

In a statement, leadership said the airline lacked the funding needed to sustain operations, despite efforts to secure additional support.

The airline also confirmed that it will not cover added travel expenses caused by the cancellations, such as hotel stays or rebooking costs, unless those are covered through a traveler’s insurance.

The closure brings an end to the airline’s decades-long run in the low-cost travel market.
