JAMAICA BEACH — Texas Game Wardens and multiple partner agencies recovered the body of a missing kayaker Monday in West Bay after an overnight search near Jamaica Beach.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the search began Sunday evening after two adult brothers launched kayaks into West Bay. Authorities said neither man was wearing a life jacket when one of the kayaks capsized.

One brother was able to make it back to shore, but the other did not resurface.

The missing man was first reported around 8 p.m. Sunday, prompting a large-scale search involving Texas Game Wardens, the United States Coast Guard, Galveston Island Beach Patrol and Texas EquuSearch.

Search efforts continued Monday in West Galveston Bay and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. According to the Coast Guard, Air Station Houston deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter along with a response boat crew from Galveston to assist in the operation.

Officials said crews eventually located and recovered the missing kayaker Monday.

The man was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. Authorities have not yet publicly released his name.

Texas Game Wardens reminded boaters and kayakers to wear properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets while on the water, noting that most boating fatalities in Texas involve victims who were not wearing one.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Texas Game Wardens said in a statement.
