GALVESTON — A 17-year-old boy was injured Monday afternoon in a reported shark bite while aboard a vessel en route to the Galveston Yacht Basin, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

At approximately 3:50 p.m., the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office notified Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston of a boat carrying three people, including the teenager, who had sustained a shark bite while offshore.

The boy’s father applied a tourniquet onboard to control bleeding as the vessel continued toward the jetties. The boat later became disabled in the vicinity of the South Galveston Jetties, prompting a response from Coast Guard Station Galveston.

Rescue crews arrived on scene, applied a second tourniquet, and transferred the patient and his father onto their vessel. Officials said the teen was conscious and alert during the rescue.

Station Galveston transported both individuals back to Base Galveston, where the patient was transferred to EMS for further treatment.

USCG said the events leading up to the bite are unknown.
