CRYSTAL BEACH – A 53-year-old Crystal Beach resident has died after being found in the Gulf waters late Monday night, according to reporting by i45NOW and confirmed by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and medics from Bolivar Emergency District were dispatched around 10:35 p.m. on June 8, 2026, to a beach access area near Barrel 47 following reports of a medical emergency along the shoreline.
When responders arrived, they located a golf cart parked near the beach with a dog inside. Shortly afterward, the man was spotted face-down in the surf.
Emergency personnel attempted CPR, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, according to Chief Deputy Melencio Villarreal.
The man was later identified by the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office as Marty Goodwin.
Chief Deputy Melencio Villarreal told KGTX 7 that investigators are awaiting toxicology results as part of the ongoing death investigation. Villarreal also said beer cans were found near the golf cart, and investigators are trying to determine whether the death was accidental or alcohol-related.
Officials have not yet determined exactly how Goodwin entered the water, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
