Key Takeaways

  • Extremely heavy rainfall expected Monday through Wednesday
  • Flood Watch in effect through Wednesday morning
  • 7-10 inches of rain expected through the end of the week, locally higher amounts possible
  • NHC highlights 30% chance for Tropical Development along the Gulf Coast over the next 7 days
  • Rip-Current risk continues

Monday – Friday

The main headlines for the first half of the week are heavy rain with an associated flooding risk, and the 30% chance of tropical development in the Northwest Gulf, right off the Texas coast.

A Flood Watch was issued yesterday by the National Weather Service until Wednesday at 7am (however I expect this to be extended). The flood threat is continuing to ramp up beginning today, lasting through the week. Rain totals through Sunday the 21st are expected to be between 7-10 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. This is significant amounts of rainfall that will fall in a short period of time. Always remember, turn around, don’t drown.

Additionally, the Weather Prediction Center has issued a Moderate Risk (level 3 out of 4) for Excessive Rainfall for both today and Wednesday. A Slight Risk (level 2 out of 4) for excessive rainfall exists in the latter portion of the week on Thursday and Friday as well.

WPC Excessive Rainfall Outlook for Monday June 15 (left) and Wednesday June 17th (right)

This is a very impressive setup, with extremely abundant moisture and slow moving storms, making for a “perfect storm” setup. Flash Flooding is likely. Begin preparations now, especially if you live in flood prone areas.

Impact Timing

Storms will begin this morning and last throughout the remainder of the day today. Main risks with the storms today will be occasional gusty winds, very heavy rain, and lightning. 2-3 inches of rain is expected today.

The heaviest rainfall driving the Flood Risk will occur Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon. This will be associated with the possible tropical development area as it moves up the coast. Regardless if the system becomes tropical or not, it is going to bring extremely heavy rainfall.

Rainfall amounts overnight Tuesday into the first half of the day Wednesday could exceed 10 inches. This is a dangerous situation, please take necessary safety precautions, and do not drive through flooded roads. Regardless if the system become tropical or not, it is going to bring extremely heavy rainfall.

Tropical Update

The National Hurricane Center has outlined a 30% area along the Texan Gulf Coast for possible tropical development over the next 7 days. This is not expected to turn into a hurricane or tropical storm, but it will bring the ingredients lending to the increasing Flash Flood risk through the week.

A Tropical Update video was posted last night to our Facebook page going more into depth on this. More updates will be posted as necessary.

Saturday and Sunday

Those of you seeking relief and good news from all this upcoming rainfall, you’re in luck.

We will begin drying out this upcoming weekend. Temps will begin climbing back into the low 90s. Rain chances will begin to decrease and it will remain partly cloudy for the most part, however I cannot rule out an isolated shower or thunderstorm especially on Saturday.

Overall, this upcoming weekend is looking to be a nice one in terms of weather.

Be sure to stay tuned to updates regarding the flood risk as the KGTX-7 Weather team continues to monitor the situation.
