AUSTIN — Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster for more than 100 Texas counties as severe weather continues to impact large portions of the state.

The declaration, issued Monday, cites heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail, and tornado threats associated with a storm system that began affecting Texas on June 14.

Among the counties included in the disaster declaration are Galveston, Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Liberty, Jefferson, Orange, Matagorda, Wharton, Victoria, Travis, Bexar, Williamson, Cameron, Hidalgo, Nueces, and dozens of others across South, Southeast, Central, and East Texas.

The disaster declaration allows the state to use all available resources necessary to respond to the ongoing emergency and assist affected communities.

Abbott’s proclamation also authorizes the suspension of certain state regulations and administrative requirements if they would hinder emergency response efforts. The order specifically allows contracting and procurement rules to be waived when necessary to protect life and property during the disaster.

The governor stated that severe weather has caused or threatens to cause widespread property damage, injuries, and loss of life across the affected counties.

The declaration took effect June 15 and remains in place as state and local officials continue monitoring weather conditions and responding to storm-related impacts.
