Police Arrest Suspect Accused of Assaulting Security Officer

Update (6/30/26) Suspect Mark Anthony Johnson, Jr. has been apprehended.

GALVESTON — UTMB Police have identified a suspect and obtained an arrest warrant following an early Sunday morning incident in which a university security officer was assaulted while assisting an employee.

According to the UTMB Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 5:58 a.m. on June 28 in the 600 block of Market Street.

Police said a UTMB employee was walking in the area when she was approached by an unknown man driving a 2010 Honda Accord. Investigators said the man appeared to be attempting to solicit the employee by offering her money.

A uniformed UTMB police security officer who was nearby observed the interaction and intervened, allowing the employee to leave the area safely.

According to UTMB Police, the suspect then exited his vehicle and physically assaulted the security officer. Following a brief altercation, the suspect returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.

Investigators said the security officer was able to photograph both the suspect and the vehicle’s Texas license plate before the suspect fled.

Through the investigation, UTMB Police identified the suspect as Mark Anthony Johnson Jr.

The employee was not injured during the incident. The security officer suffered minor injuries.

UTMB Police said increased patrols remain in place while the suspect remains at large. Anyone with information about Johnson’s whereabouts or the incident is asked to contact the UTMB Police Department at (409) 772-1111 or call 911 in an emergency.

Police stated on Tuesday that Johnson had been located and arrested.
