GALVESTON — Organizers are preparing for the return of Bra Dazzle this fall, an annual fundraiser that helps provide free mammograms through the University of Texas Medical Branch’s mobile mammography program.
The event, now in its 15th year, will be held Oct. 1 at The San Luis Resort on Galveston Island.
Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said the fundraiser was originally launched at Haak Vineyards & Winery in Santa Fe before moving to Galveston. Proceeds from the event help fund the UTMB mobile mammogram bus, providing free breast cancer screenings to those who may not otherwise have access to them.
Attendees can expect bra decorating and table decorating contests, entertainment, and a runway-style fashion show featuring creatively decorated bras modeled by volunteers.
Constable Edinburgh of Precinct 2 said supporting the fundraiser was an opportunity to give back to families affected by breast cancer.
“Breast cancer not only affects women, but it affects everyone,” Edinburgh said. “At some point, someone you know is going to be affected by cancer. This was our way to help people who can’t afford to get a mammogram.”
Galveston County Commissioner Joe Giusti encouraged community members to attend and support the cause, noting the event welcomes both women and men.
“It’s a great event,” Giusti said. “We raise a lot of money for the mobile program at UTMB.”
Bra Dazzle is scheduled for Oct. 1 at The San Luis Resort. Information on tickets, sponsorship opportunities and event details is available through the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce.
