LA MARQUE — A 43-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after police responded to a 911 hang-up call involving a woman in distress and encountered a struggle along Interstate 45, according to the La Marque Police Department.

Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 12:40 p.m. on July 14 after receiving the 911 call.

According to the department, an arriving officer found Steven Sandles seated in the passenger seat of a vehicle and allegedly attempting to steer the vehicle into traffic on Interstate 45 southbound. Investigators said Sandles was believed to be armed with a handgun, was suspected of being under the influence of narcotics, and had allegedly assaulted the driver before officers arrived.

Police said the initial officer attempted to take Sandles into custody, but he allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the officer. A physical struggle ensued on the shoulder of Interstate 45 while traffic continued to pass at highway speeds.

Additional officers responded to the scene and, according to police, Sandles was subdued with a Taser and taken into custody without further incident.

Sandles was charged with:

  • Assault of a Peace Officer — $25,000 bond
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 2 (1 gram to less than 4 grams) — $25,000 bond
  • Resisting Arrest, Search or Transport — $7,500 bond
  • Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence — $7,500 bond
  • Possession of a Dangerous Drug — $7,500 bond
  • Reckless Driving — $5,000 bond

The La Marque Police Department said no officers, victims or motorists were seriously injured during the incident.
