GALVESTON — Galveston Island’s September calendar will feature several major events, ranging from wine and shrimp festivals to a sandcastle competition, Pride celebrations and a week dedicated to the island’s pirate history.

The month’s events begin Labor Day weekend with the Galveston Island Wine Festival, scheduled for Sept. 4-6 at Moody Gardens. Celebrity chef Brian Duffy, known for appearances on “Bar Rescue” and “Beat Bobby Flay,” will join regional and local chefs for wine tastings, culinary experiences and live entertainment.

The festival will include Penguins and Pinot, a grand tasting held inside the Aquarium Pyramid. Tickets for the wine festival start at $163.

Also during Labor Day weekend, the Galveston Pride Festival will take place Sept. 4-6 at East Beach, Robert’s Lafitte and other venues across the island. The multi-day celebration includes a beach bash, DJs, vendors, meet-and-greets and drag shows. Most events are free.

Moody Gardens will close out the holiday weekend Sept. 6 with its first themed drone show. The more than 10-minute show, created by Sky Wonder Pyrotechnics, will begin at 9 p.m. and use hundreds of illuminated drones to create designs inspired by Moody Gardens attractions and marine life.

Sept. 6 will also mark the final weekend for the Dinos Alive and Skeletown exhibits at Moody Gardens.

Later in the month, pirates will take over portions of the island for the second annual Galveston Pirate Festival Week, scheduled for Sept. 14-20.

Events will be held at Moody Gardens, downtown Galveston and the Historic Seaport and will include a pirate vendor market, entertainment, treasure hunts, pub crawls, a tour of the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, a harbor tour and a sleepover aboard the USS Stewart. Tickets start at $25.

The Galveston Sandcastle Festival follows Sept. 19-20 at East Beach. More than 80 teams of Houston-area architects, designers, engineers and contractors are expected to compete in the annual sandcastle competition sponsored by the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days and will also feature live music, a Castle Creation Kids Zone and Bloody Mary Beachside Battle. Admission is $10, with an additional charge for parking at East Beach.

September’s scheduled festivities conclude with the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival on Sept. 25-26 at Saengerfest Park.

The festival begins Friday evening with a party and live music. Saturday’s events include the Shrimp Scamper 5K Fun Run, Ron Hoover boat show, Strand merchant walkabout and Gumbo Stroll. Admission prices vary.
