GALVESTON — Batman fans will have a chance to get an up-close look at one of cinema’s most recognizable vehicles when a replica of the 1989 Batmobile rolls into Galveston this weekend.

The Batmobile replica will be featured during the fifth annual Moody Gardens Car Show, scheduled for Aug. 29-30 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center.

Modeled after the Batmobile driven by Michael Keaton in the 1989 film “Batman,” the vehicle will be available for guests to see and photograph throughout the weekend.

According to Moody Gardens, the replica’s owner, identified as A.K., grew up fascinated by the Batmobile and its gadgets. Years later, he traded one of his vehicles for a partially completed Batmobile project and began transforming it into the finished replica.

The project took approximately a year and a half and included rebuilding the engine and transmission and adding air conditioning and power brakes. Moody Gardens said the finished vehicle produces nearly 1,000 horsepower.

The Batmobile will join a collection of classic, custom and collector vehicles during the two-day car show.

Saturday will feature the show’s red-carpet event, highlighting participating vehicles and the stories behind them. Judging will take place throughout the day before awards are presented Sunday.

First-, second- and third-place trophies will be presented across multiple judged categories. Spectators will also have an opportunity to select winners for the People’s Choice Trophy and Red Carpet Favorite Trophy.

Automotive vendors selling parts, accessories, memorabilia and other items will also be featured during the event.

Hunton Group is the title sponsor of this year’s Moody Gardens Car Show.
