TC man faces $2 million bond after alleged drug operation found near schools

TEXAS CITY — A 50-year-old man faces two felony drug charges after authorities dismantled an alleged drug operation near College of the Mainland and local schools, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

Jahml McDonald was arrested Aug. 18 following the execution of a search warrant at a home in the 1200 block of Appomattox Drive. His combined bond was set at $2 million, with $1 million imposed for each charge.

Authorities said the home was within walking distance of College of the Mainland and nearby schools.

Lt. Ira Fowler of the Galveston County Organized Crime Task Force said investigators began looking into the property approximately two months ago after receiving an anonymous tip about suspected narcotics activity.

During surveillance, investigators reportedly observed people who appeared to be teenagers purchasing narcotics at the home, Fowler said. Investigators later established probable cause and obtained a search warrant.

Authorities said they found marijuana, THC wax and other substances inside the property. Investigators also discovered alcohol that was allegedly being sold to minors and equipment allowing customers to make purchases using credit or debit cards.

“There was a credit card machine where kids could come using a debit card to make their purchase,” Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said.

Several other people were arrested inside the home, although investigators said they appeared to have been present at the time and were not necessarily involved in the alleged operation. Authorities did not identify those individuals or disclose the charges they faced.

No firearms were recovered during the search, officials said.

District Attorney Kenneth Cusick said McDonald has a previous murder conviction and prior drug convictions. Cusick said McDonald had served 25 years for the previous conviction, although he did not provide additional information about McDonald’s parole status.

McDonald was also reportedly free on bond in connection with a marijuana case filed last fall. A hearing concerning his current bond was underway Thursday morning in the 405th District Court, Cusick said.

Cusick said his office intends to prosecute the case to the fullest extent permitted by law.

McDonald is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The Organized Crime Task Force includes personnel from the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Galveston, League City and Dickinson police departments. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
