The Mustangs’ 2026 season officially began with an offensive fireworks display at Henry Winston Stadium. Friendswood claimed a 31-6 victory over the Texas City Stingarees, making an emphatic statement behind a strong performance from senior quarterback Joshua Brister.

Brister found his rhythm late in the first quarter. With the game still tied, he connected with receiver Jackson Owens for a 43-yard pass that moved the Mustangs into Texas City territory. Brister followed with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Owens, giving Friendswood its first touchdown of the season.

Brister continued to impress in the third quarter. He connected with receiver Nate Roher for a 12-yard touchdown pass before finding Peyton Lowe for a 22-yard score nearly four minutes later.

Brister’s teammates also helped extend the Mustangs’ lead. In the second quarter, following a botched snap by the Stingarees’ special teams unit, running back Trip Bateman powered through the defense for a 2-yard touchdown run. Noah Clegg added the only field goal of the night, connecting from 20 yards.

The Mustangs’ performance gave the home crowd plenty to celebrate. Whether it was a sign of what is to come remains to be seen.

Friendswood will return home to face the Clear Brook Wolverines at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
