Key Highlights

• Air Quality Alert: Higher ozone levels are expected Friday across Galveston, Houston, and surrounding areas. Limit prolonged outdoor activity.
• High temperatures will be in the upper 80s, with lows in the lower 80s through Sunday. Humidity will remain low Friday and Saturday, with a slight increase Sunday.
• Conditions will remain mostly dry as high pressure dominates. A low pressure system may bring scattered light showers along the coast Saturday afternoon.

The Weekend

There is an air quality alert for Friday as ozone pollution levels will increase throughout the day. To avoid any breathing or respiratory health issues, try to avoid outdoor activities such as driving that would increase the ozone levels or being exposed in areas such as urban areas outdoors where concentrations are the highest .

Temperatures will reach the upper 80s, with lows in the lower 80s from Friday through Sunday. Expect partly cloudy skies throughout the weekend.

From Friday through Sunday, a mid- to upper-level ridge will remain in place, keeping conditions dry. Winds will be from the northeast on Friday and Saturday, with speeds of 10–15 mph Friday and 5–10 mph Saturday. On Sunday, winds will briefly shift to the southeast early in the morning before shifting to the east for the rest of the day, with speeds of 10–15 mph. The wind speeds and directions from Friday through Sunday will help keep conditions cooler and comfortable, with slightly increased humidity on Sunday.

On Saturday a low pressure system from the south of the region will borderline the persistent high pressure centered over the region that will allow for some minor warmth and moisture to approach the coastline and allow for some scattered light showers in the mid afternoon on Saturday with little or no accumulation expected.

Tropical Update

According to the National Hurricane Center, there are currently two tropical storms in the eastern Atlantic Ocean: Fay and Gonzalo. Even though these systems have reached tropical storm status, both are expected to remain well away from the United States. Therefore, our region is expected to remain in the clear from any direct tropical impacts at this time.

The ongoing El Niño pattern has contributed to an environment that is less favorable for Atlantic tropical development, which has helped keep overall activity below average this season. In fact, as of September 25, the Atlantic has had seven named storms but no hurricanes.
