TEXAS CITY – Two Texas City Communications Department employees were terminated for violating city policy involving fictitious Facebook accounts.
Chief of Staff Joe Tumbleson told KGTX 7 that Communications Director Jennifer Laird and multimedia specialist Derek Miller were the subjects of an internal investigation that resulted in both employees losing their jobs.
“We hold all our employees to the highest standard and integrity, and particularly those responsible for communicating with the public,” Tumbleson said.
The two are accused of creating a fake Facebook profile impersonating La Marque City Council member Joseph Lowry.

Evidence was presented to a grand jury, but no action was ultimately taken.
Lowry said he believes further action is warranted but is pleased that some progress has been made.
“Happy something came of it. Not happy with the district attorney. I feel they clearly violated the law, but it needs to be reinvestigated with new evidence I’ve been told,” Lowry said.
According to Lowry, the situation also caused considerable internal turmoil.
Lowry hopes the case will be presented to a grand jury again.
Meanwhile, someone has assumed the communications role at the Texas City Communications Department, but that person’s identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Laird and Miller were both unreachable at the time of this story’s publication.
