City extending the season for the Lasker Park Community Pool

City Bulletin Avatar

GALVESTON – The City of Galveston is extending the swimming season at Lasker Park Community Pool thanks to a generous three-year private donation and a partnership with the Galveston Independent School District.

The pool, which typically closes for the winter on Oct. 31, is now expected to remain open through January. During the extended season, public swimming hours in the lap pool will be on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Ball High swim team will use the facility during the afternoon, thanks to a new partnership between the city and Galveston ISD.

Galveston resident Anne Brasier provided the funding to keep the pool open longer and give the community more opportunities to swim throughout the winter. Brasier pledged $50,000 a year for the next three years through Better Parks for Galveston to help cover the added costs of keeping the pool open, including staffing, heating, pool chemicals, and the purchase and installation of a pool cover.

The pool cover, estimated to cost $36,500, will be funded equally by Brasier’s donation and the school district, with each contributing half. The cover will help retain heat and reduce heating costs during the colder months.

In previous years, the expense of heating the pool during winter made an extended season too expensive for the City. Because this is the first season the city has heated the pool for an extended period, operating costs and the feasibility of maintaining the extended schedule are still being evaluated, but we currently anticipate keeping the pool open through January. We will provide updates as they are available.

Daily rates will remain the same and season passes extend to the winter hours. Pool information may also be found atwww.galvestontx.gov/letsswim.
