GALVESTON — Moody Gardens is mourning the loss of Sam, a sea lion who lived at the Galveston attraction for 10 years before dying unexpectedly Oct. 6.
Greg Whittaker, general curator at Moody Gardens, said Sam had experienced medical issues and was scheduled for diagnostic testing. During the procedure, Sam died.
In the days leading up to the procedure, staff noticed changes in Sam’s behavior, including a lack of appetite and less interest in training sessions, which Whittaker said was unusual for him.

Sam from Utica, was the offspring of Porter, another sea lion who came to Moody Gardens from New Orleans with four other sea lions following Hurricane Katrina.
Whittaker described Sam as a typical alpha sea lion who was vocal, curious and eager to participate in training sessions. Sam was also known for peeking into behind-the-scenes areas, and guests often commented on his presence.
Moody Gardens acknowledged Sam’s passing in a social media post. The attraction has also maintained an ofrenda in its visitors center over the past couple of years, allowing guests to share their thoughts and memories of animals.
