GALVESTON – A 39-year-old Houston man drowned Sunday evening while swimming in the Gulf near 13th Street and Seawall, according to Galveston Beach Patrol Chief Austin Kirwin.

Kirwin told KGTX 7 that the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. Two individuals who were boogie boarding nearby noticed the man floating face down in chest-deep water. They pulled him to shore and began first aid before lifeguards arrived.

Rescuers with the Galveston Island Beach Patrol initiated CPR, which continued until EMS arrived on scene. The man was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of family.

Chief Kirwin stated this was the sixth beachfront drowning this year.
