GALVESTON – Kenneth A. Cusick has been appointed as Galveston County District Attorney by Governor Greg Abbott, bringing experience from both military and federal prosecution to the role.
Cusick was born in Texas City and raised in La Marque. He graduated from La Marque High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Texas A&M University in 1983. After attending South Texas College of Law in Houston, he served three years on active duty in the Marine Corps as a Judge Advocate, prosecuting cases under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
During his time in the Marine Corps, Cusick also served as a special assistant U.S. Attorney in North Carolina, prosecuting federal cases involving firearms and other offenses. In 1990, he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas in Corpus Christi, where he worked on federal cases for more than 30 years, including the past seven in the Galveston federal courthouse.
Cusick said the appointment provides an opportunity to serve the community where he grew up. “Galveston County is home,” he said. “This is a chance to work directly with the community and local law enforcement.”
As District Attorney, Cusick will oversee prosecutions ranging from minor offenses to capital murder. He emphasized that the office approaches each case according to the law, the circumstances of the offense, and the defendant’s history. Regarding concerns about bail, Cusick explained that magistrates in the district courts determine amounts and conditions, while the DA’s office provides information to ensure informed decisions.
Cusick noted that his federal experience offers opportunities for coordination with local and federal law enforcement. “I have contacts that can assist with investigations when needed,” he said.
This is Cusick’s first time running for elected office; previous positions were by appointment. He expressed appreciation for the governor’s selection and said he will continue to assess the office’s operations while preparing for the upcoming election.
