BACLIFF – A crash involving a Galveston County Sheriff’s Office deputy occurred around 7:45 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of 4th Street and Grand Avenue.

According to Capt. Tommy Maffei, the deputy was responding to a call, when a truck exiting a nearby gas station entered the roadway, resulting in the deputy’s vehicle striking the truck.

The deputy was transported to a hospital with what officials described as minor injuries.

The driver of the truck has been identified as 48-year-old Stephen Santos. He was arrested and charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Earlier suspicions of intoxication were not included in a later update from authorities.

Authorities maintain that the emergency lights and sirens were activated at the time of the crash. Officials have not addressed in detail the differing accounts from witnesses.

However, multiple witnesses at the scene have reported conflicting observations regarding the use of emergency equipment.

In a separate account provided to KGTX 7 News, a witness who says he was on scene and rendered aid to both drivers stated the truck was traveling across 4th Street when it was struck along the right rear panel by the approaching patrol unit. That witness also said emergency lights and sirens were active, adding that the deputy was reportedly responding to a call involving an unconscious person.
