The Weather Channel teases return of its classic 90s look

Stevie Bernardoni Avatar

There’s some real nostalgia in the forecast.

The Weather Channel is giving fans a glimpse of its past, teasing a retro-style experience modeled after its 1990s broadcasts.

The announcement came April 1 on the network’s official Instagram page, and yes, they made a point to say it wasn’t an April Fools’ joke.

In the post, viewers got a look at a throwback version of “Local on the 8s,” complete with the familiar graphics, slower pacing, and that unmistakable smooth jazz vibe that longtime viewers will recognize instantly.

For a short time, the retro feature was actually available inside The Weather Channel app. But it didn’t stay up for long.

The company says it pulled the preview after getting a wave of positive feedback and a lot of requests. Viewers weren’t just into the idea, they wanted more of it. Some asked for different versions spanning the late 90s and early 2000s, while others specifically called for more of the classic music.

To go along with the throwback, The Weather Channel also released a playlist on Spotify featuring tracks inspired by the music that once played during its broadcasts.

For many people, “Local on the 8s” wasn’t just about checking the forecast, it was part of the atmosphere. The combination of simple visuals and laid-back music turned routine weather updates into something oddly relaxing.

There’s no word yet on when the full retro experience will return, but based on the reaction so far, it’s clearly something viewers are ready to see again.
