Texas City opens applications for SHIP summer internships

TEXAS CITY — College students in Texas City have an opportunity this summer to gain hands-on work experience while earning a $5,000 scholarship through the city’s Summer Hire Internship Program, known as SHIP.

The City of Texas City is now accepting applications for the eight-week internship program, which offers students real-world experience in a variety of career fields. Upon successful completion of the program, interns will receive a $5,000 scholarship paid directly to their school, along with a $50 weekly meal stipend and a year of career counseling.

Available internship positions include community events and tourism, planning and zoning, building and inspections, finance, human resources and legal, innovation and technology, police detective, fire and emergency medical services, public works, and assistant golf professional.

According to the city, several former interns have returned after graduation and now work full time in various departments.

To qualify, applicants must be a junior or senior in college, or a current graduate student. Applicants must also either be Texas City residents or graduates of a Texas City ISD school.

The 2026 SHIP program is scheduled to run from June 1 through July 31, with applications open through May 10. More information and the application can be found on the City of Texas City’s website.
