GALVESTON — The mother of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting earlier this week met Wednesday with leadership from the Galveston Police Department, seeking answers surrounding the death of her son.
Details from the meeting were first reported by i45NOW.
According to the report, Paula Martin, joined by several community activists, met with Police Chief Douglas Balli following Monday’s officer-involved shooting involving her son, 47-year-old Randy Martin.
Police said the shooting happened during a traffic stop in the 1700 block of 55th Street after a physical altercation between Martin and an officer. Police said Martin allegedly reached for the officer’s firearm during the struggle.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Martin said she wanted honesty and clarity from police officials as investigations continue.
“I want to say that everything you hear is not always true,” Martin told i45NOW, adding she did not believe officials were attempting to hide information from her.
Balli said he expressed condolences to the family and promised transparency throughout the investigation.
The officer involved was identified by police as Joseph Nino, an 11-year law enforcement veteran and narcotics and K-9 officer with the department. Nino has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
Police said no weapon was found at the scene.
According to i45NOW, sources familiar with the investigation said Martin resisted attempts to search and detain him, leading to a physical struggle before shots were fired. Neither police nor investigators have publicly released body camera or dash camera footage.
Community activist Shon Arthur urged residents to remain calm while the investigation proceeds and asked the public to respect the family as funeral arrangements are made.
Martin’s mother described her son as caring and community-minded, saying he frequently participated in toy drives and helped provide shoes for people in need following his release from prison several years ago.
