SAN LEON — Firefighters quickly contained a structure fire Tuesday evening at a workshop in San Leon, preventing what officials say could have been much more extensive damage.

According to San Leon Assistant Fire Chief Jody Garcia, crews were dispatched around 7:03 p.m. to the 1100 block of 7th Street after a fire was reported at a metal-frame workshop building.

Officials said the homeowner, who builds show trucks, had been welding on one of the vehicles inside the shop. After welding operations stopped, the homeowner’s wife noticed smoke coming from the building and called for help.

San Leon firefighters were first to arrive and began attacking the fire. Mutual aid assistance was provided by departments from Dickinson, Bacliff and Kemah.

Garcia said approximately four trucks were inside the workshop at the time of the fire. The building sustained moderate damage, but crews were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, limiting further losses.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 8 p.m.
