LEAGUE CITY — Galveston County commissioners tabled proposed changes to the county’s employee benefits policy Monday after dozens of employees attended a Commissioners Court meeting to oppose the proposal.
Throughout public comment, county employees and organizational representatives addressed commissioners about proposed changes to HR-008.
Much of the concern centered on longtime employees potentially losing sick and vacation time they have accrued during their county employment.
Several offered several possible alternatives, including paying employees for their accrued leave before implementing any changes. Others suggested grandfathering certain current employees into the existing policy.
After hearing the concerns, commissioners agreed to table the proposal and revisit the matter later.
Commissioners also said they would be open to forming a committee to work with employees and seek a fair middle ground for the county, its employees and taxpayers, after being suggested by Sheriff Jimmy Fullen.
No decision was made Monday on what revisions, if any, will ultimately be adopted. The proposal has been set aside for further discussion.
