TEXAS CITY — A firefighter was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday after battling a fire at a vacant commercial building in Texas City, according to the Texas City Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at 4:06 p.m. to the 1200 block of 21st Street North following a report of a commercial structure fire. The property used to belong to the old Tradewind Theater.

Battalion Chief Royce Medina said crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building. Firefighters began an initial attack before requesting mutual aid from San Leon, Dickinson, League City, La Marque and Santa Fe.

The building was vacant and boarded up at the time of the fire, Medina said. Firefighters found the main body of the fire toward the rear of the building.

No civilians were injured. One firefighter was transported to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

The fire was extinguished Wednesday afternoon. Its cause remains under investigation.
