GALVESTON — A new mural created by a Spanish artist and gifted to Galveston by its sister city of Málaga, Spain, will be officially unveiled during a free community celebration at Menard Park later this month.

“Galveston Loves Málaga: An International Celebration of Art in the Parks” will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Menard Park, 2222 28th St.

The centerpiece of the event will be a new commemorative mural honoring Bernardo de Gálvez and his contributions to the American Revolution.

The mural was created by Málaga-based public artist Eduardo Luque Puertas, professionally known as “Lalone,” and gifted to Galveston by the City of Málaga as part of the De Gálvez 250 initiative and cultural programming surrounding the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Málaga provided the mural design and artist support, including travel, accommodations, artist fees and painting supplies. Galveston coordinated the project locally and provided site preparation, equipment, logistical support and public programming.

The artwork is the second mural created by an international artist at Menard Park this year, according to the city.

Sunday’s celebration will begin at 10 a.m. and include an art market, live music, spoken-word performances and family activities.

At 10:30 a.m., Galveston Mayor John Paul Listowski is scheduled to read an official proclamation. A preview featuring two selections from the opera “Yo Solo” will immediately follow, honoring Gálvez and his role in the American Revolution.

Officials representing Galveston and Málaga are also expected to participate in the mural’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This celebration gives our community an opportunity to welcome an international artist, recognize an important chapter of American history, support local creatives, and experience the many ways art brings public spaces to life,” City Manager Brian Maxwell said in a statement.

The Sept. 13 event is free and open to the public.
