GALVESTON — A man authorities identified as a previously deported Guatemalan national was arrested Tuesday after allegedly ramming a federal law enforcement vehicle and crashing into a tree while attempting to flee an immigration enforcement operation in Galveston.
The incident happened Sept. 22 near Doubloon Avenue and Carthegena Avenue during an operation involving Galveston County Precinct 3 deputies participating in the federal 287(g) program and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
Authorities identified the man as 32-year-old Wilian Antonio Dardon-Soto.
According to the Precinct 3 Constable’s Office, officers attempted to stop a vehicle registered to Dardon-Soto. The agency said the federal law enforcement vehicles involved were operating with emergency lights and sirens when Dardon-Soto allegedly rammed one of the vehicles.
Authorities said Dardon-Soto continued driving before crashing into a tree, disabling his vehicle.
A Precinct 3 deputy contacted dispatch and requested assistance from the city of Galveston following the crash. Galveston police and EMS responded to the scene.
The constable’s office said Dardon-Soto had previously been arrested by U.S. Border Patrol near Hidalgo, Texas, in August 2016 and was removed to Guatemala on Aug. 25, 2016.
According to authorities, Dardon-Soto later reentered the United States and was encountered again during the Sept. 22 operation.
The investigation remains ongoing. The constable’s office did not provide additional information about the specific criminal charges Dardon-Soto may face in connection with the crash.
The operation involved the Precinct 3 Constable’s Office and ICE under the federal 287(g) program, which allows participating state and local law enforcement agencies to perform certain immigration enforcement functions under ICE authority.
