GALVESTON — Residents, law enforcement officials and community members gathered Thursday evening at the San Luis Convention Center for the annual Bra Dazzle event, a fundraiser aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and helping provide free mammograms to local residents.
The event, which combines entertainment with fundraising, marked another year of the community tradition.
Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen, one of the event’s co-chairs, said Bra Dazzle began about 15 years ago at Haak Vineyards & Winery. The event was originally started by Pam Schwertner and Sharon Free.
Fullen also took part in the evening’s entertainment, saying he planned to model and dance during the event.
“I hope I don’t offend anybody by my wicked dancing,” Fullen joked. “But anyway, we’re going to do what we can to raise as much money as we can tonight.”
Co-chair Sam Gorashko said this year’s event featured an increased emphasis on production and entertainment.
Attendees were treated to performances, music, dancers, showgirls and models as part of the evening’s festivities.
While the entertainment is a major part of Bra Dazzle, organizers said the event’s primary purpose remains supporting breast cancer awareness and access to screening.
Funds raised through the event help support the UTMB mammogram bus, which provides mammography services to people who may otherwise have difficulty accessing breast cancer screenings.
The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce served as the main organizer of this year’s event, with support from members of the community and local organizations.
Organizers said the event once again brought the community together for an evening of entertainment while raising money for an important cause.
