GALVESTON COUNTY — With summer travel ramping up and Memorial Day weekend approaching, law enforcement agencies across Galveston County are launching a coordinated crackdown on impaired driving after officials reported a sharp rise in DWI arrests this year.
Authorities announced Tuesday that arrests for driving while intoxicated have climbed 65% over the last five months, prompting agencies to increase enforcement efforts countywide.
The initiative will place additional deputies and officers on roadways during busy travel periods, major events and holiday weekends. Officials said patrols will focus heavily on high-traffic areas throughout the county.
The operation marks the first large-scale effort involving Galveston County constables working alongside local police departments, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety in a unified DWI enforcement campaign.
Officials also said they are partnering with event organizers and bars and restaurants that serve alcohol to encourage ride-share use and other safe transportation options.
Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick warned that repeat offenders could face tougher prosecution as part of the initiative.
According to Cusick, repeat DWI offenders should expect stricter plea negotiations and the possibility of increased jail time.
While officials stressed the campaign is centered on preventing impaired driving before tragedies happen, they said those caught driving intoxicated will face heightened enforcement efforts throughout the summer season.
Authorities are urging both residents and visitors to plan ahead, use designated drivers or ride-share services, and avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking.
